aurora boeralis

One summer night in eastern Michigan, she woke with a dry mouth and went into the kitchen for a glass of water. As she stood looking out the glass doors onto the sleepy lake, something to her right caught her eye. She winced her eyes to focus them through the darkness, and over the hills in the distance, some strange lights. At first she thought “heat lightning perhaps”, but then realized she was looking at something different than she’d ever seen. Her heart skipped a beat, and she smiled. “The northern lights!” she whispered. She stood there for a moment taking it all in, and then quietly but quickly made her way to the bedroom where her son and daughter in law were sleeping.

She arose them to come take a look outside. And there the three of them stood, watching the lit up sky. The colors glowed, ebbed and flowed, much like satin in the sun.

Just a sweet, sweet memory of mine that I wanted to share with you. Love you, Bev. Thanks for waking us up that night.
